Risk Management: Turning Honesty into a Competitive Advantage

Why acknowledging risk makes funders more confident, not less.

Risk Management: What Funders Are Actually Looking For

The risk management section is a credibility test. Funders have seen businesses fail. They know what goes wrong. If your plan does not identify the risks they are already thinking about, they lose confidence in your judgment.

Common Risks to Include

Depending on your business type, these are the risks funders expect to see addressed:

Market risks: Competition, price changes, demand shifts

Operational risks: Supplier failure, staff turnover, equipment breakdown

Financial risks: Cash flow gaps, exchange rate exposure, interest rate changes

Regulatory risks: Licence delays, compliance changes, tax policy

External risks: Load shedding, economic downturn, political instability in South Africa

You do not need to list all of them. Pick the 4–6 that are most relevant to your business and treat them seriously.

The Mitigation vs. Contingency Distinction

Mitigation is what you do before the risk materialises to reduce its probability or impact. Example: "We maintain 60 days of inventory to buffer against supplier delays."

Contingency is what you do after the risk materialises despite your mitigation. Example: "If our primary supplier fails, we have a second-tier supplier who can deliver within 14 days."

Both matter. Mitigation shows prevention; contingency shows resilience.

Avoid the Trap of Generic Risks

"Economic uncertainty" and "competition" are not useful risk entries — they apply to every business on the planet. Be specific: "Loss of anchor client (currently 40% of revenue)" is a real risk with a real probability and a real mitigation.

  • [ ] Each risk has a probability and impact rating
  • [ ] Each major risk has a concrete mitigation action (not just 'monitor')
  • [ ] The top 2 risks have contingency plans
